Calcined bauxite is valued because, under extreme heat and pressure, it forms sharp, irregular particles that resist polishing. Those properties make it useful where friction matters more than smoothness.

This site holds writing shaped in much the same way. The posts here are unpolished particles: pieces of thinking produced through practice-based research, teaching, and sustained engagement with further education, construction, and the systems that govern them. They are not final arguments or settled positions, but fragments of inquiry, written to test ideas, surface assumptions, and name tensions that are often smoothed away.

I work with people who build things, and I’m interested in how we decide whose work, skills, and knowledge count.

I’m an educator, sociologist, and researcher in the construction and further education sector. I care deeply about craft, technical skill, and the humans behind them. My work questions systems that reduce education to outcomes, workers to cogs, and value to numbers.

I love the construction industry both fiercely and critically, and I’m committed to research and practice that honours its people, challenges its exclusions, and strengthens its future beyond narrow measures of productivity or profit.

Much of the writing here sits between policy, practice, and theory.

I’m currently on a PhD pathway, using teaching as fieldwork and research as resistance (and occasionally, therapy). Writing is part of that method: a way of thinking in public, without rushing ideas.

Alongside all of this, I’m a working mum. The juggle is real, the plates are often spinning, and progress is rarely linear. That reality shapes how I teach, how I research, and how seriously I take flexibility, compassion, and honesty in education and leadership.

I’m a former amateur weightlifter, now in a long-term and complicated relationship with the barbell. I remain interested in strength, effort, and what it takes to carry a heavy load, physically, intellectually, and otherwise.
